29 miles
October 19, 2006
The rain pours all through the night, and continues into the morning. I hide from the wet and cold for a few hours, and finally set out in the early afternoon. It will be another short day.
The route turns inland, and I follow a beautiful valley sandwiched between two 2,000 foot-high ridges – the coastal range. You’d never know I’m so close to the ocean. The sky momentarily clears, and mist rises from the mountaintops. There’s a damp, quiet, peaceful atmosphere, and the afternoon light brightens the scenery.
Back out on Route 101, I ride a few feet from the water of Tillamook Bay, where there are several small boats on the water. The fog and westerly light render everything as a dim shadow over the calm waves, and I snap a great picture. Then I stop in Bay City, and upload the latest photos.
It’s getting dark early, and I move a short distance to Tillamook, where I spend the night. Life is good.
