Monument Valley – The Forrest Gump Road, The Wildcat Trail, and Valley Drive
I returned to Monument Valley with Jamies on July 15th. We were very, very impressed on our first visit, and wanted to return as soon as possible. There was the remaining loop of Valley Drive to explore, and I especially wanted to locate the “Forrest Gump Road,” the place they filmed the scene where Forrest Gump chose to end his run across the country. There’s also a single official hiking trail in the valley – The Wildcat Trail – that I had it in mind to do.
These first photos depict the sunrise over the valley, as seen from Goulding’s Lodge to the west.

The have a small airport – this must be an amazing flight.
Immediately after sunrise we headed north on US 163 into Utah to find the Forrest Gump spot.
And here it is – this specific location is on US 163, between the Utah/Arizona border and Mexican Hat, Utah. The view faces south on 163 toward Kayenta, Arizona.

“I’m pretty tired… I think I’ll go home now…”

Skip to 5:35, if you must.
There are a few structures like this within the Navajo Tribal Park, set up to duplicate original dwellings in the region.
Our hike around West Mitten Butte on the Wildcat Trail is on the next page, with the most unlikely of trail guides!
