The TransAmerica Trail – Indiana

Kurtz, IN – Louisville, KY

70 miles

June 17, 2006

Got started pretty late today, and continued on my way back toward Louisville. Stopped in Medora where the local church was having an outdoor fish fry benefit. There were a lot of local kids hanging out there for the afternoon, and it was a fun, small town atmosphere. The guy who was running it slipped me a little extra fish and said, “Now you can’t say people from Southern Indiana ain’t nice!” Some of the kids had guitars, and as I pulled away, I heard the opening chords to the 80s song “Every Rose has its Thorn,” so that was stuck in my head for a little while afterward.

Later I stopped at the McDonalds in Salem and had my typical two double cheeseburgers, and two apple pie on top of that. Then I read the nutritional information and realized I just injested 12 grams of trans fat. I think I learned why the Mickey D’s gives me an energy boost (Besides the Coke tap). One double cheeseburger packs 26 grams of protein – if I remember correctly – and I usually have at least two. So what if they burn the rain forests in Brazil for grazing land, feed the cows ground up garbage, shredded newspaper, and anything else they’re dumb enough to eat (Which is a lot). It’s a dollar! :)

This afternoon in Borden I spied a few signs pointing to a Southern Gospel concert in the park, so I went to check it out. Gospel isn’t exactly my thing, but live outdoor music always has that certain charm. There were four singers – all with great voices and harmony. The only problem was that it was really hot out, so everyone was away from the stage hiding under the pavilions.

Tonight I found a good cheap motel here in Indiana, just north of Louisville. I know I’ve been staying in motels a lot lately, but I’m taking a little vacation from vacation here, if that makes any sense. There are thunderstorms coming through right now anyway.

Tomorrow is Father’s Day and I’m taking the day off. I’m close to the highway and there’s a strip here with every chain store/restaurant imaginable, including an Outback right next door. I was considering looking into working there, or someplace else tomorrow for a little extra cash. All the restaurants are sure to need the hands for the holiday, but I decided against it. Life is good.
