The late afternoon and evening light offer an opportunity to photograph, for a second time, many of the features that I passed this morning.
Here you can clearly see the greater Tower of Ra.
This is one of my favorite shots from this day, though I wish there was a hiker standing in the light on the far point of the trail… or better yet, a bighorn sheep!
This was the last photo I would take on this hike, as I went on to follow the Waldron Trail to the rim, reaching the top just after sunset. The most weary part of the day would come as I hiked alone in the dark, along featureless forest service roads through the Ponderosa Pine forest. It was the peak of the elk’s rut season, and their bugling calls echoed through the woods and surrounded me for the duration.
