On July 8th I set out on a day hike down the South Kaibab Trail to the Tipoff, west on the Tonto Trail to Indian Gardens, out to Plateau Point and back, and then up the Bright Angel Trail. This loop is about 13 miles, with the extra trip to Plateau Point bringing it up to about 16.
I started this hike with James around noon. Such a late start is very ill-advised – attempting this as a day hike in July is even less wise. I drank almost two gallons of water on this day, and still felt somewhat affected by the heat.
This would be my first experience on the Tonto Trail – I loved its open nature and continuously expansive views within the world below the rim.
approaching “ooh-ah” point on the South Kaibab Trail

This was the thermometer on the outhouse at Cedar Ridge – still not even too far below the rim! There was an NPS official stationed there, specifically for the purpose of discouraging hikers like ourselves not to venture any further.
a rare patch of shade on the descent
another patch of shade, and a good place for a rest
a nice view of Phantom Ranch from below Skeleton Point
The Zoroaster Temple is always prominent through this section of the canyon.
After a long break in what little shade we could find near the outhouse at The Tipoff, we set out west on the Tonto Trail
