A Short Hike in the Florida Everglades, and Deep Sea Fishing

The first day of my road trip was an uneventful trip from Allentown PA to somewhere in South Carolina, driving almost the entire distance on I-95. I slept that night in the parking lot of a Wal-Mart store.

The next day was much more interesting, beginning with a ride along Georgia’s coastal islands. I considered visiting some of the the state parks in the area and Savannah, but continued straight on through into Florida. I had never been to Florida before, and after a cold Pennsylvania winter it was fun to drive through the Jackonsville skyline with the windows rolled down.

Of course a quick little visit to Daytona was necessary.

So was a stop at the Kennedy Space Center. I looked out across the water at Cape Canaveral, where we human beings launch our spacecraft into the cosmos. The whole region is known as the Space Coast, and the telephone area code is 321.

That night I arrived at my friend Julie’s place in Boynton Beach. She invited some friends over and we partied into the wee hours with music and a little Guitar Hero.

The next morning, we went out for some deep sea fishing.

I had never been out on the ocean before. The water was rough for our small boat and we all got seasick and didn’t catch anything, but it was a good time nonetheless. These pictures were taken on the inlet where things were a lot more tame.

The next day we went down the to the Everglades to go see some gators. We hiked the Otter Cave Hammock Trail and we were not disappointed.

One of many solution holes that characterize this loop.

Julie says “Uh… there’s a gator.”

That evening we had dinner at a cool type of tiki bar restaurant with a largely Hispanic/Cuban clientele and live music. It was great to be sitting outdoors in this type of setting at the end of February.

The Cuban Bono?
