Featuring 177 scenic photographs, this beautiful volume chronicles a 19 day, 250 mile backpacking journey on The John Muir Trail, through California’s celebrated Sierra Nevada Range. With several quotations by John Muir himself, photographer Jamie Compos presents some of the most spectacular scenery to be found on any hiking trail in America.
At last, for those of you that have told me I should create a book, here it is!
I’ve culled the very finest from over 2,000 photos of my thru-hike on The John Muir Trail, and arranged them in this vibrant, handsome 8 x 10 inch edition.
When designing Range of Light, it was my goal not only to create a book that anyone can view and enjoy, but to strike at the heart of those of us who truly love to hike. This amazing trail deserves no less.
Within these pages you will find no record of daily miles, and no petty recollections of snacks and sore feet. In lieu of such trivial matters, I’ve focused on dozens of full page, engaging photos, and the eloquent words of the man himself – John Muir – aiming for a theme of awe and grandeur such as can only be found “on the trail.”
We are now in the mountains and they are in us, kindling enthusiasm, making every nerve quiver, filling every pore and cell of us. Our flesh-and-bone tabernacle seems transparent as glass to the beauty about us, as if truly an inseparable part of it, thrilling with the air and trees, streams and rocks, in the waves of the sun – a part of all nature, neither old nor young, sick nor well, but immortal.

“If there’s a heaven, I hope it’s like The John Muir Trail.”
