Deer Creek / Thunder River Loop – Day 2,3

For me this is the grandest of all waterfalls in Grand Canyon, bursting forth from the cliff and bare rock, giving birth to an oasis like something from a Tolkien novel.

We had dinner and spent a long time at this idyllic place, but eventually we had to pull ourselves away and put in some more miles before dark.

“Stay right there!” I yelled to Charles and Dave, catching their silhouettes against the glowing Redwall and Muav Limestone.

Surprise Valley at sunset was like a dream… perfectly silent and inspiring of a contemplative pace, as the desert began to cool and breathe its daily sigh of relief. This was simply one of those indescribably quiet moments that defines what hiking is all about.

Through twilight we grunted up the Redwall, and set up camp at the first suitable spot on the Esplanade, by light of headlamp.

On the third and final day we simply woke early and hiked out the Bill Hall Trail to our vehicle, and drove home to the South Rim. Charles had to be at work that same evening.

This stretch of trail was well documented on our first day, so I put the camera aside for this one and focused on hiking out of the canyon. I’m so accustomed to having my DSLR camera swinging from my neck… it’s usually a welcome relief to pack it away.

This was a great trip.
