While driving across New Mexico on I-40, I noted that it was relatively short detour from Santa Rosa to Billy the Kid’s gravesite in Fort Sumner.
This old church isn’t near Fort Sumner – it’s farther east along old route 66.
I sped to get there while there was still some daylight remaining.
Ironic that the site is in iron shackles – just what The Kid avoided all his life.
The tombs are decorated in pocket change from visiting observers.
Fort Sumner is truely out in the middle of nowhere in the deserts of New Mexico, a perfectly ideal setting.
